Reporter Sarah: Thanks Alex. I've spent the day with students at Cox High School. Many spend most of their free time on this social networking site, but what are they posting? We talk with Junior, Jamie Vest, who's an avid user.

Jamie: Yeah, I love Facebook. I mostly use it for chatting with friends or looking at pictures. Yea, sure, I update it a ton, because my friends will see it and maybe meet up with me. Well, not real private, nothin' too serious, it's just my friends lookin' at it anyway. yeah (laughs) I actually met my boyfriend through facebook. He friended me because he thought I was cute and the came to a party I was at.

Sarah: Many teens using Facebook aren't aware of the severity of divulging personal information, even as simple as where they are going for the night. For more on this, we interviewed Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg

Mark: People have really gotten comfortable, not only sharing more information and different kinds, but more openly and with more people.when Facebook began most people thought: why would I put any information on the internet at all? Now most users don’t think twice about privacy before making posts. Due to the Privacy changes Facebook made in December, your name, profile picture, gender, current city, networks, Friends List, and all the pages you subscribe to are now publicly available information on Facebook. With more than 350 million users on Facebook, privacy is more important than ever.

Sarah: In order to help parents with facebook's privacy settings, here are the steps by steps how to set them.
  1. From your Profile page, hover your mouse over the Settings menu at the top right and click “Privacy Settings” from the list that appears.
  2. Click “Profile Information” from the list of choices on the next page.
  3. The third, fourth, and fifth item listed on this page are as follows: “birthday,” “religious and political views,” and “family and relationship.” Locking down birthday to “Only Friends” is wise here, especially considering information such as this is often used in identity theft.
  4. Depending on your own personal preferences, you may or may not feel comfortable sharing your relationship status and religious and political views with complete strangers. And keep in mind, any setting besides “Only Friends” is just that – a stranger. While “Friends of Friends” sounds innocuous enough, it refers to everyone your friends have added as friends, a large group containing hundreds if not thousands of people you don’t know. All it takes is one less-than-selective friend in your network to give an unsavory person access to this information.

Sarah: For more information on privacy settings, parents can visit our website, NBC10.com or gadgetwise.blogs.nytimes.com. You can also leave feedback and tell us how Facebook has affected you. Reporting live from Cox high school, Sarah Wen on NBC10 News at 6. Back to you, Alex.
